Taby and Rufus spend several hours in the Riftlands, retracing the steps of the search parties that had encountered the strange birds in an attempt to locate them again, but aren't having much luck initially. Eventually, however, Rufus' magnetoreception picks up a cluster of strange electric fields some distance away that he suspects might be the birds and they follow it. While they encounter some difficult terrain and just avoid falling into a hidden hole that seems unsettlingly like a rudimentary pit trap (an unlikely coincidence or a problem for another day? who knows!), they do eventually find the flock.
There are dozens and dozens of the plasma birds, all perched up in the trees, chirping away and grooming and building little nests. A few are even singing the melody from the storm again and Taby is able to get a recording while they remain hidden and come up with a plan. Given the birds' abilities and the fact that they're here to gather information, charging into combat seems like a bad idea. Instead, the pair try not to draw attention and Rufus guides them to an outer edge of the flock where there aren't quite so many of the plasma birds. Remarkably, they go unnoticed and are able to get out their cages: the metal energy cage for Rufus and the
Poké Ballforcefield ball for Taby. They'll probably only get one shot at this!Waiting until what seems like the right moment, Taby silently counts down and signals for them to go! Rufus' energy cage (guided easily by his powers from a distance) moves to encompass one of the birds before the energy bars appear around it and trap it inside, while Taby's forcefield ball strikes one of the birds, which gives up a shocked squawk as it's captured. Immediately, the area erupts into chaos as the trapped birds shriek and begin trying to escape and their fellows take to the sky with shrill cries. It won't be long before the whole flock is stirring, so they need to move. Both are able to collect their cages with the birds inside and take off running. They get dived at by a few birds on their way out, but seem to be getting away!
Unfortunately, as they're running, the captured birds are still struggling in the cages and giving off wild charges of plasma. While Rufus doesn't have to hold his directly due to his powers and the laser cage seems to be taking the beating well enough, the forcefield ball is getting hot in Taby's hands and shudders with each blast of plasma. After some time, it gives up the ghost and bursts apart. While they're able to absorb the burst of energy without taking any real damage, the flailing bird scratches up their face and arms before escaping back into the forest. Well shoot.
Regardless, they manage to make it back to Enodia Station with one plasma bird and both of the cages (though the forcefield ball is damaged). It seems like the forcefield ball has met its match...
