(1) She is definitely a real person. Ernestine has an active online presence (she's mostly on TikTok, where she does short videos about science and the rifts; she also rates viral videos of Liminals using their powers and seems very enthusiastic about all of them! she's correctly identified a couple of fake videos and gets visibly huffy about 'frauds'), has represented her high school in various academic competitions (winning awards in both science and mathematics competitions), and was a proud participant of the Lake Champlain International Father's Day Fishing Derby until a few years ago. She's not at all hard to track down. Through all of this, he'll see that she is seventeen (about to start her senior year!) and a petite string bean with big glasses and straight brown hair.
(2) The Waters family has lived in the area for a long time. Ernestine's family has run a bed and breakfast in Colchester for more than fifty years! Wow! Obviously, business has been rough since the appearance of the Riftlands and the fall of Burlington. Still, they seem to be hanging on somehow! While most local publications that mention the family are focused on the bed and breakfast or the time they won the Lake Champlain International Father's Day Fishing Derby, articles from four years ago detail the disappearance of her father, Ernest Waters, a registered Liminal. The man is still missing. His powers are not identified anywhere but could possibly be requested via IRIS' registration database.
(3) Her specific 'deal' is unclear, but... It's obvious that Ernestine is scientifically-minded and quite interested in Liminals for both academic and personal reasons, so it's not difficult to guess why she'd want to work at Enodia Station.
While it takes a few days for Enoch's letter to Ernestine to get a response, it's obviously because of the postal service and not because of the teen. The letter he receives back is striving to be professional and intellectual but radiates sincere enthusiasm and gratitude that someone as accomplished as Enoch would take the time to reply to her!! She concludes with a few more insightful questions about his research (...does she expect him to be her pen pal? can she just not help herself? who knows!) and an abundance of thanks and hopes that she'll get the position with his help. Thank you, Dr. Waldinger!!!

Ernestine is clearly over the moon to have heard from Enoch again and, as always, has more questions. She also expresses an intention to study atmospheric physics in relation to the rifts and rift formation. Why do they form where they do? Why do they behave like they do? How do they impact the existing energy/radiation budget? Does whatever's on the other side bleed over in other ways? There are a lot of questions she wants to be the one to answer! What do you think, Dr. Waldinger?

According to IRIS' database, Ernest Waters possesses the following abilities:
(1) Liminal Sense: An innate knowledge of what entities/creatures/etc. around him are Liminal and what their abilities are. Per the most recent assessment of Ernest, he can accurately locate and identify the abilities of Liminals within a ten mile radius. It's noted in his file that he was once able to predict the presence Liminal powers shortly before they had actually manifested.
(2) Power Mimicry: An ability to alter his physical makeup and replicate the abilities of other Liminals for a period of time. Per the most recent assessment of Ernest, he can hold onto the powers of others for a period of hours and he can manifest multiple power sets (up to three) at the same time.
